Larry Warren was probably one of the best athletes in our class, and certainly one of the most prolific, as he played a number of sports. But Larry is probably best remembered as a friend, whose untimely death reminds us of our own mortality. Like so many of our classmates, Larry played Little League baseball in the late 40s and early 50s. He played basketball at Washington School and basketball and baseball all through his years at Marietta High School. John Gerken recalls that he and Larry joined the Army soon after graduation under the buddy plan, which took them through Basic Training and Military Police school together. Then they were split up, Larry going to Fort Ritchie, MD, while John was assigned to Fort Bragg. John remembers Mrs. Warren attending their graduation from MP school and notes her support of not only Larry but his friends throughout their school years.

Larry was then was assigned to Germany for the remainder of his three years and was honorably discharged in 1962. He returned to Marietta to become a police officer. He was married to a girl from St. Marys named Beverly, and they had a son Mark. Later he worked for the Ohio Department of Liquor Control in Columbus as a training officer before his death in 1972. John says, “He was my very best friend, and I miss him to this day very much.” Bill Vernon remembers that when he joined our class at the beginning of the eighth grade, Larry was the first person he met, and they remained fast friends throughout high school. (Information contributed by John Gerken and Bill Vernon and channeled through Pat Richards, so Larry, friend, if we got anything wrong, please attribute it to lapses of memory!)
